                  HARUNA

I did not start this war. We have fought through the nights with strength and vigour, disbanding every enemy that brought this grieve upon us. I must protect my kingdom which is the one thing i chose to live for.

My name is Haruna….Princess of Oboli kingdom….and this is my story….

Oboli kingdom is a peaceful land with natural endowments, people often came to explore our lands prior to the war. A serene land of beauty, peace and thriving bliss. A Land where the most beautiful maidens are seen and the best crops are harvested. Our men are known for their fierce, rigid and profound fighting skills.
On this day, my father, the paramount ruler of Oboli land received news that we were having visitors from the neighbouring village. A visit which became the mask of what befell our blissful land. My father ruled with apt diplomacy and granted audience to anyone who sort after he’s wise counsel  and the visitors from Omimiri were no exception. In a swooning entourage of luxury, the visitors graced our kingdom and we’re greeted with praises and cheers as was accustomed. They met with my father the great king and reiterated their reason for their visit to Oboli land and as expected my father granted them the privilege to stay and ordered for a welcome feast.

It was a fascinating sight to behold as these visitors were mostly young and vibrant men. However, one caught my attention and our gaze met and I later understood that his name was Obanja. Obanja was a fine, handsome, young man whose built was way distinct from the others, he looked refined. Into the feast, he approached me with a warm smile and we became familiar with each other after exchanging pleasantries.
Months passed and Obanja finally professed his love for me, my joy knew no bounds. The thought of telling my father that I had fallen for one of our visitors made my liver quiver.
I decided to summon the courage and on this beautiful evening while having  one of my mentoring sessions with my father,  I told my father about the steaming affair.  He was uneasy about it and that made me worried, different thoughts came through my mind or was it because it was the first time a true born of the land had fallen for an outsider?  I concluded . I couldn’t pressurise him, however I needed to take it slowly.

Obanja and I kept our love afloat.
” Haruna, I love you very much. I wish your father consents to our love.”  said Obanja one sunny afternoon .
” Same here. I am tired of being locked up like a little princess. I am a grown woman and I wish to have a family of my own someday” I responded with a weary face.
Obanja stroked my hair and whispered a question to me.
“What?! ” I exclaimed.
“Impossible. That is our kingdom’s most treasured secret.  Please don’t ask me such question again” I responded vehemently.
“I’m  sorry my Princess. I didn’t mean to disrespect you or your people. I was just curious to know where the power of your kingdom lies. Soon I will be your husband,  it is only right I know.” he asked with a sober look.
“Obanja such a secret can’t be shared with you. Wait until you are my husband” I replied.
Obanja sighed and gave me a kiss on the forehead and a warm embrace.
My father and I had constant arguments, over my continuous affair with Obanja.  He strongly disagreed about it. At a point  I was furious. “How can my father be so self- centered? How can he not allow me to be happy?” I thought. The chiefs and elders also supported him and this got me even more furious. No one could stand for me. I knew I was all alone in this and needed to fight for what I believed strongly in, my love for Obanja.
Obanja and I met under a tree and swore to love each other till the end. I told him everything he needed to know about my kingdom. It is true Oboli Kingdom was great but at the same time mysterious. We were so blessed that is why we never lacked anything. We never lost a battle and people always marveled at our victory each time.

Obanja was shocked when I showed him where our Sacred Ark was kept. He marveled at the sight of it and promised to keep the secret safe with him.

Our love blossomed and we became the focus of discussion on the lips of every villager. His Co-travellers were quite astonished too and hoped we were given a chance to be happy.

My father summoned Obanja and his Co-travellers and all the villagers for a council meeting. I was shocked when i heard my father had given a decree that they should leave our village at once never to return again. I challenged his decision in front of everyone and was rebuked afterwards.
“A decree is sacrosanct”,my father reiterated. Obanja and I held each other in a tight grip only to be separated by guards who took me away.
One fateful night, we were greeted by a thundering strange sound which only symbolizes that the  Sacred Ark had been moved . Chaos had befallen upon us. My father summoned all villagers.
“What must have happened?” I thought.
It was reported that a stranger entered the Cave and stole the Sacred Ark.
“No it can’t be” I screamed which got everybody curious to know what was happening to me. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me and entered the cave.
Could it be… ” Obanja’s name came into my thoughts. I wept and wailed in pains.
“How could he have betrayed me?”
Soon the kingdom faced calamities. My father became so ill and gave his last decree. ” Haruna will become the next Ruler” he said as he took his last breathe. Immediately, I received news that Omiriri Kingdom had already gathered a large number of warriors and they were going to launch an attack soon. They  had vowed to take over  our kingdom.
Warriors of Oboli kingdom gathered at the palace in preparation for the war. All the villagers wailed and panicked  over the recent calamities and the recent death of the king.  Warriors were ready to protect the kingdom however I  wasn’t certain if I could lead them to victory.

“Your Highness, we must be strong at this time. These people have taken away our treasure and now want to start a war with us. We can’t relent at this time.” said Okonkwo the strongest warrior in the kingdom.

“So you think we can win this war? The king just passed on and we have lost our powers” said one of the chiefs with so much anguish.

“it is unfortunate such a calamity befell us. If only her highness listened to the late king and some of us” said one of the villagers with so much bitterness lamented.
Some of the villagers tried to calm him and sought to remind him of the respect due to the throne but he didn’t bulge.
I could see the fear and restlessness in everyone. I knew it was time. This wasn’t my first war and I couldn’t allow fear disarm me at this point.
“I don’t believe in the power of the Sacred Ark. I believe in the power that lies with us as a people . I shall take responsibility and lead my people to victory, We gave them a chance to explore our lands but betrayal became their gift of appreciation. I,  Princess Haruna, Heir apparent to the throne of Oboli Kingdom will lead this war to victory. Get me my Bow and Arrow.” I commanded.
The villagers cheered up with so much faith.
I marched with my warriors to the battle field  and came face to face with the warriors of Omiriri Kingdom. My heart sank when I saw Obanja lead his warriors towards us. ” I shall have your head” I screamed with fury.

The war began. Men were slaughtered. Lives were lost. My archery skills were unbeatable. I was known as Princess of War because I had led men to battles and brought victory in the past and I didn’t want to give up on this one.
The moment was here when I came face to face with Obanja. He had changed so quickly. Where was the love he professed to me?  How could this be?  I had so many questions to ask him but the battle field wasn’t the perfect moment, saving my kingdom was my focus.
Our blades clashed and I didn’t miss the target of striking  him at the slightest chance I had. He groaned in pain before me as he coughed out blood. I was in pains too.  I saw the man I love die before my sword.

He fell on my shoulders only to whisper these words ” I love you and I have always loved you. I didn’t steal the Ark. My colleagues did and induced me into  battle. What I gave to them was fake. The real Sacred Ark lies beneath your favourite river. The only river you told me gave you so much comfort. I am glad I had this chance to say the truth. Spare my people. Take them as slaves rather than kill them”. he said as darkness engulfed him. Victory was ours and sanity was finally restored.
For a moment I was murky knowing he kept his words of loving me. How could we have such an unfortunate event in our lives? I pondered while I sat majestically on my throne.  Sometimes in my quiet moment I relive my experience with Obanja in my head, i smile into a deep gaze and leave stories untold. Today I’m Queen and I’ll reign long to give my people succour. Now,  I am Queen Haruna, the 15th Ruler of Oboli Kingdom.
THE END.
